My left foot movie6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() The film adaptation of “My Left Foot” lays bare the trials and tribulations of Brown’s life, many of which were caused by his nearly-complete quadriplegia due to Cerebral Palsy. The movie was an unexpected hit, and it led to the rediscovery of Brown’s work by a new generation of readers. That book was called “My Left Foot,” and in 1989, it was made into a film of the same name starring Daniel Day Lewis in the eponymous role. It was his condition that drove Brown, who was diagnosed with severe spastic Cerebral Palsy shortly after his birth in 1932, to write an autobiographical tome in 1954 that covers his life from humble beginnings in Dublin flat with his parents, Bridget and Paddy, and 12 siblings, to his struggle to train the only part of his body that worked – a foot – to write, paint and inspire the literary world. “My Left Foot” explores the genius of Irish author Christy BrownĬhristy Brown was one of the 20th Century’s most unique voices he was a writer and an artist that pushed past his own physical limits to leave a compelling legacy that extends well beyond his native Dublin. ![]()

Penny marshall my mother is nuts6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() In 1988, she became the first female director to earn $100 million at the box office for her movie Big, which starred a very young and very silly Tom Hanks. But she decided she wanted to take her talented behind the camera, and there, Marshall broke new ground for female directors in an industry that rarely saw women succeed. Marshall launched her Hollywood career as an actress with roles on The Odd Couple and as one of the titular characters in the wildly popular television show Laverne & Shirley. "We hope her life continues to inspire others to spend time with family, work hard and make all of their dreams come true." “Penny was a girl from the Bronx, who came out West, put a cursive ‘L’ on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story,” her family told ABC News on Tuesday in a statement about Marshall's death. Over the course of her incredible career, the A League of Their Own director broke down barriers in what was, and still is, a male-dominated industry. The pioneering director and actor best known for her role on Laverne & Shirley, Penny Marshall, died on Monday night, leaving behind an incredible legacy, both in front and behind the camera. ![]()

Enzymes by Paul Engel6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Finally, he looks at the many varied ways in which individual enzymes, taken out of their biological context, are used nowadays as tools - in washing powders, food production, waste treatment, and chemical synthesis. He also examines medical aspects of enzymes, both in the way faulty enzymes cause disease and in the way enzymes can be used for diagnosis and therapy. Paul Engel shows how X-ray crystallography has revealed the complex molecular shapes that allow enzymes to function at an extraordinarily sophisticated level. This Very Short Introduction explains the why and the how of speeding up these reactions - catalysis - before going on to reveal how we have evolved these catalysts of such extraordinary power and exquisite selectivity. Working together, teams of enzymes carry out all the processes that collectively we recognise as life, from making DNA to digesting food. Each one of these small proteins speeds up a single chemical reaction inside a living organism many millionfold. ![]() Enzymes are the astonishing, tiny molecular machines that make life possible. ![]()
