![]() ![]() In spite of this novel's focus on heavier topics, its readability and relatability will make it popular among most teens. ![]() While the author makes clear what happened to Max, the assault is not described in graphic detail. Max grapples with understanding whether he has actually been raped and what he should do about it the consequences of the rape also cause him to question the lessons his father taught him as a young child. Some readers may be turned off by Max and his buddies and their "locker room talk," occasionally resorting to homophobic slurs. This story has an easy, conversational tone, and the high jinks of the two boys and their separate groups of friends, in addition to their budding romance, provide much-needed relief from the intensity of the scenes in which each of them is dealing with his individual struggles. Jordan hires Max to work the food truck with him, and two boys who thought they had nothing in common find that they are more alike than they thought. Jordan is attempting to help his mom with their food truck. Max has a secret, though, that he hasn't told anyone, not even his buddies, and he's trying to be the fighter his father raised him to be. Gr 10 Up-Max is a popular high school athlete who spends most of his free time with his two best friends, playing video games and joking around. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They’re just fun to read, and I fly through them without a problem, and they’re funny. The plot isn’t the most exciting, and the characters aren’t uniquely interesting, and there are some cliches throughout the book… but for me, what makes these books so fun to read isn’t because of a brilliant writing style, or fascinating plot, but because of how I feel when I read them. These books have a quality about them that reminds me of Twilight, in a good way, and that nostalgia is part of what makes these books so fun for me. I loved diving back into this world and getting to spend some more time with these characters. We get to watch Daemon fall in love with Kat and see the thoughts that run through his head as he struggles with staying in her life or going, and watching the effects of him saving her life time after time instead of seeing it all from Kat’s point of view. Armentrout re-tells Obsidian, the first book in the Lux series, but from Daemon’s perspective. Oblivion dives the reader back into the world of the Lux series, where we first fell in love with Kat and Daemon and Dee and learned about aliens living on earth among humans. ![]()

Owl moon book6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() It was just one of many that made me enjoy the glory of a picture book. I’m very thankful for my brand-spanking-new-no-ripping-Mylar copy, and very thankful for that one a long time ago. This book is a beautiful combination of words and pictures, and certainly worth revisiting. The colors are in the duo, the shadows, and the landscape, and the regal owl, and bright white leaves room for the text. John Schoenherr represents Jane Yolen’s words exceptionally well in the white sky and white snow. It’s late, late at night, and the colors are made up of shadowy tones. I love color in this book because it is simultaneously lush and stark. ![]() (Grown-up eyes that are wrinkly and saggy, but whatever.) It takes you along as a father leads his child for a walk in the woods to hopefully find a great horned owl. ![]() How fun to revisit childhood moments with some grown-up eyes. I read it as a child in the late 80's and purchased it to pass along the story to my 7 year old boys. While I so vividly remember the cover, the Caldecott Medal, and that ripped Mylar, the story was entirely unfamiliar to me when I read it again recently. It was wrapped in ripped Mylar and had smudged pages, and I can imagine it accompanied many bedtime rituals around the neighborhood. I remember this book from the Ridge Elementary School library. It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, I think it’s well documented in these parts that rowdy read alouds steal my heart the most when it comes to picture books, but this one… Jane Yolen has rare rivals when it comes to a mastery of language and creating rich imagery with words. ![]()

Inside joy division6/5/2023 ![]() “It featured chord buttons, just press to play a chord. “It was a Woolworth’s Winfield brown Bakelite plastic reed organ,” drummer Stephen Morris wrote in his memoir, Record Play Pause. Originally known as Chance, Atmosphere was first conceived after the band acquired a new – if rather less than hi-tech – bit of kit from guitarist Bernard Sumner’s grandmother. Joy Division wrote Atmosphere in the early summer of 1979: a fertile creative spell which also spawned future Closer classics such as Atrocity Exhibition and Colony. This came during a period when we were continually writing great songs, so it didn’t seem like such a big deal to be honest.” Having said that, it didn’t bother us at the time. ![]() “It was a limited edition that we never got any money for. ![]() “The tracks Throbbing Gristle previously put on their Sordide Sentimental EP were never going anywhere else, but we put two of our best songs on ,” bassist Peter Hook recalled in his book, Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division. “We were continually writing great songs” ![]() |
